Culture
Establish a classroom culture where it is okay to fail. Establish this culture by what you say (adopt a mantra) and what you do (react well to mistakes & set the example).

Autonomy
Give the kids some choice in what they are learning or how they are learning it.

Teach for Discovery
Remember that students that are new to a subject are exploring and seeing how it fits into their future. Allow them to have some fun with it as they find out what it is all about.

Be Supportive
Remember that authoritarian teachers have high expectations while they exhibit warmth and support.
